Operators apply this pressure using a surface choke. While the choke restricts fluid flow, it creates resistance that pushes against the fluid column. Therefore, the added pressure travels down the wellbore to increase the total bottomhole pressure. Applying back pressure is the standard procedure to prevent formation fluids from entering the well during operations.
