Annular Friction Losses (AFL)

Friction against the wellbore wall and drill string creates this resistance. The pumps must overcome AFL to maintain circulation. Consequently, this friction directly increases bottomhole pressure while pumps are active. It is a necessary variable for Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) calculations.
