End of Curve (EOC)

« Back to Glossary Index

The exact depth where the wellbore completes its calculated turn and transitions into a straight, highly deviated, or horizontal path. Reaching this point fundamentally shifts fluid dynamics during Managed Pressure Drilling. Because cuttings transport becomes significantly more difficult in flat sections, the crew must precisely adjust the surface choke and mud pumps. Therefore, operators continually balance Equivalent Circulating Density to prevent sudden pressure fluctuations while clearing the wellbore. Navigating the EOC safely establishes the required pressure parameters for the remainder of the drilling operation, while often adhering to the stability guidelines outlined in NZ 2403.
