Equivalent Static Density (ESD)

« Back to Glossary Index

Equivalent Static Density (ESD) is the true pressure exerted by a stationary fluid column at a specific depth, expressed as a fluid density. This measurement begins with the surface mud weight. However, it mandates the inclusion of suspended rock cuttings, fluid compressibility, and thermal expansion. Therefore, ESD establishes the exact bottomhole pressure against the formation when pumps are off.
